Three typical ways of steel sheet pile driving and their advantages and disadvantages

As a commonly used support structure, steel sheet pile is widely used in deep foundation pit support, levee, cofferdam and other projects. The driving method of steel sheet piles directly affects the construction efficiency, cost and construction quality, and the choice of driving method should be considered according to the specific project requirements, geological conditions and construction environment.

The steel sheet pile driving method is mainly divided into individual driving method, screen type driving method and purlin driving method, each of which has its own characteristics and applicable scenarios.

Individual driving method

Each steel pile sheet is driven independently starting from a corner of the sheet wall and laid one by one until the end of the whole project. This method does not depend on the support of other steel sheet piles and each pile is driven into the ground individually.

Individual driving of steel sheet piles does not require complicated auxiliary support or guide rail system, and can be operated in a fast and continuous manner, which has the advantages of easy construction, fast and efficient, and low construction cost. The disadvantage is that the steel sheet piles are easily tilted due to the lack of support from neighboring piles during the driving process, resulting in large cumulative errors and difficult quality control of verticality and accuracy. Individual driving method is suitable for geological conditions with uniform soil and no obstacles, especially suitable for short pile construction and temporary support projects which do not require high accuracy.

Screen driven method
A group of steel sheet piles (10-20 piles) is inserted into the guide frame in rows to form a screen-like structure and then driven in batches. In this method, the steel sheet piles at both ends of the screen wall are first driven to a certain depth at the design elevation as locating sheet piles, and then driven in batches in the middle in sequence, usually at certain intervals until all the steel sheet piles have reached the required depth.

Screen driven method has better construction stability and accuracy, can effectively reduce the tilt error and ensure the verticality of the sheet pile wall after construction, and at the same time, it is easy to realize the closed closing because of the positioning of both ends first. The disadvantage is that the construction speed is relatively slow, and it is necessary to build a high construction pile frame, and in the absence of neighboring sheet pile support, the self-supporting stability of the pile body is poor, which increases the complexity of the construction and the safety risk. The steel sheet pile screen driven method is suitable for large-scale projects with strict requirements on construction accuracy and verticality, especially in geological conditions where the soil quality is complicated or longer steel sheet piles are required to ensure structural stability and construction quality.

Purlin Piling Method

At a certain height on the ground and at a certain distance from the axis, a single or double purlin frame is built first, and then the steel sheet piles are inserted in the purlin frame in order, and then after the corners are closed together, the steel sheet piles are gradually driven to the design elevation in a stepped manner one by one. The advantage of purlin piling method is that it can ensure the plane size, verticality and flatness of the steel sheet pile wall in the construction process with high accuracy; in addition, this method can provide stronger stability to the structure after closing together by using purlin frame, which is applicable to a variety of geological conditions.

The disadvantage is that its construction process is relatively complicated and requires the erection and dismantling of the purlin frame, which not only increases the workload, but may also lead to slower construction speed and higher cost, especially when special shaped piles or additional treatment is required. The purlin piling method is suitable for projects with special requirements on construction accuracy, small-scale projects or where the number of piles is not large, as well as under geological conditions with complicated soil quality or the presence of obstructions, where finer construction control and structural stability are required.
