Earlier, media reports said that from April 15, the EU will resume the retaliatory tariffs imposed in 2018 and 2020 to counteract the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs in that year, covering U.S. exports of cranberries, orange juice and other products to Europe, with a tariff rate of 25%.
The announcement said that the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs on the EU are unjustified and will cause damage to the U.S. and European economies and even the global economy. On the other hand, the EU is willing to negotiate with the U.S., if the two sides reach a “balanced and mutually beneficial” solution, the EU can call off countermeasures at any time.
In February this year, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a document announcing that he would impose 25% tariffs on all U.S. imports of steel and aluminum. on March 12, the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs officially came into effect. In response, the EU said that the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs are equivalent to taxing their own nationals, which is bad for business, worse for consumers, and disruptive to the supply chain. The EU will take “strong and proportionate” countermeasures to protect the rights and interests of EU consumers and businesses.
