API 5L generally refers to pipeline steel pipe (pipeline pipe) of the implementation of the standard, pipeline steel pipe including seamless steel pipe and welded steel pipe two categories. At present in the oil pipeline we commonly used welded steel pipe pipe type spiral submerged arc welded pipe (SSAW), straight seam submerged arc welded pipe (LSAW), resistance welding pipe (ERW), seamless steel pipe is generally used in the pipeline diameter is less than 152mm.
The national standard GB/T 9711-2011 steel pipe for pipeline transportation system in the oil and gas industry is compiled according to API 5L.
GB/T 9711-2011 specifies the manufacturing requirements for seamless and welded steel pipes of two product specification levels (PSL1 and PSL2) for pipeline transportation systems in the oil and gas industry. Therefore, the standard only applies to seamless steel pipes and welded steel pipes for oil and gas transportation, and is not applicable to cast iron pipes.
Steel Grades
The steel grades of raw materials for steel pipes of this API 5L standard are GR.B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X70, X80, etc. The steel grades of steel pipes are different, and the requirements for raw materials and production are also different, but the carbon equivalents between different steel grades are strictly controlled.
Quality standards
In the API 5L pipe standard, the quality standards (or requirements) for steel pipe are divided into PSL1 and PSL2. PSL is an abbreviation for product specification level.
PSL1 provides a general level of pipe quality requirements; PSL2 adds mandatory requirements for chemical composition, notched toughness, strength properties, and additional NDEs.
